On the 23rd anniversary of the famous People Power Uprising that brought about the downfall of the 21-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines, Filipinos in New York City commemorate the vibrancy and legacy of the movement against Martial Law, February 21st, 1-5pm in Manhattan. Entitled PAGPUPUGAY: A Tribute to Anti-Martial Law Activists and Commemoration of People Power 1, the event was held at Gallery 1199, located in the ground floor of Local 1199/SEIU United Healthworkers East at 310 West 43rd Street between 8th and 9th Avenue in Times Square.
"We are giving a fitting community tribute through song and poetry to the men and women who defied fascism with courage and honor both in the Philippines and outside of the Philippines, particularly in New York City, where there was also a very strong anti-martial law movement of Filipinos and non-Filipinos," states Ramon Mappala, a member of the NY Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines (NYCHRP), a sponsoring organization of the event. "We cannot let that rich history be forgotten. We must remember it and teach our youth of today our lessons as these types of struggle continue."
Mappala is also a former student activist who participated in the historic campus protests in the 1970's, popularly referred to as the First Quarter Storm (FQS), that culminated with Marcos' declaration of Martial Law in 1972. It wasn't long before Mappala was captured and imprisoned by the Marcos regime, and eventually released. As a complainant in the famous class suit against the Marcos estate, Mappala, along with thousands of other victims of human rights violations committed by the Marcos dictatorship, has yet to see material compensation as they were promised. Today, Mappala remains a human rights advocate and independent film producer in New York City.
At the same time as the height of the long struggle against growing fascism in the Philippines under Marcos, peace advocates in New York City also took up the torch of denouncing Martial Law in the Philippines. Groups such as Movement for a Free Philippines (MFP) and others banded together to publicly denounce rampant human rights violations and growing corruption in the Philippines. The combination of a strong movement inside the country as well as international advocates outside resulted in what many term as the "peaceful, bloodless revolution" known as People Power 1, and the unseating of Marcos in 1986.
Bienvenido Lumbera, Philippine National Artist for Literature, UP professor, and FQS alum, will be delivering a keynote message during the event. The event is also co-sponsored by the Filipino youth group known as Anakbayan New York/New Jersey.
